|||||
Ity (left) and Fancy Cat. - File The Trench Town Reading Centre on Lower First Street Kingston 12 will come alive with the sounds of music and laughter, and the spirit of giving this Heroes weekend, as comedians Ity and Fancy Cat host their second annual treat for the children of the community tomorrow at 1 p.m. The treat will involve the sharing of educational supplies, food, drinks and other goodies, plus entertainment and motivational engagement with the children, as well as a cash donation to support the work of the reading centre. Ian 'Ity' Ellis and Alton 'Fancy Cat' Hardware both grew up in and still maintain very strong ties with the sometimes volatile community where they first met as players on the Boys' Town Minor League football team.The popular comedy duo considers it their duty to give back to the community that nurtured them. However, they insist that education must be a key area of emphasis and children must be the main beneficiaries of their altruistic activities. As such, they have chosen to work with and through the reading centre, in their push to contribute to the development of their place of origin. The Trench Town Reading Centre is a community library/reading room and education centre and provides a welcoming, safe and fun space for community activities. It has an extensive and comprehensive collection of books and materials for all ages, and a vibrant programme that emphasises holistic education, creative arts and cultural awareness. The centre was founded in 1983 by Canadian Roslyn Ellison. It receives no funding from Government and survives through donations from corporate entities and generous individuals like the popular comedy duo who have adopted the centre as their official charity. Actors, comedians, and other performers from the Ity and Fancy Cat TV show team, and a host of musicians and other friends in the entertainment industry, will join the comedy duo in what promises to be an exciting and fulfilling encounter, and a great start to the upcoming Christmas season. The treat will run to 5 p.m. at the reading centre which is located inside the Vin Lawrence Park, opposite the Bob Marley Culture Yard. |
