Red Rat pokes fun at Vegas |
|||||
Red Rat - Contributed Veteran dancehall entertainer Red Rat has a new single called 'Bun Xmas' which is creating a major buzz on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter because it makes lyrical references to the situation involving the sordid love triangle of fellow dancehall artiste Mr Vegas, the mother of his child, Shellian McBayne, and a third party. The song, produced on the Red Square Productions label, starts out with Red Rat's trademark, 'oh no!' and uses great wit and sarcasm to outline the whole sordid drama that unfolded on Facebook and Twitter earlier this month when Mr Vegas exposed the shenanigans of his unfaithful ex-girlfriend for the whole world to see and discuss. Mr Vegas also wept openly during television interviews. "I was talking to some of my friends and the argument came up about the Vegas situation and one of my female friends (Miss Suss Queen) was saying that a lot of people (both men and women) get bun everyday, all throughout the year, not only in Easter. So the idea jumped in my head, that means a nuff man ago get bun fi Christmas. And seeing that the Christmas season is coming around i thought it would be a good song to drop for Christmas," Red Rat said. The chorus is brilliantly penned as Red Rat sets up the punchline for multiple Easter bun and Christmas cake references. He deejays: "Please don't mek this buss/mi hear the gal dem a siddown and discuss/No badda look fi rum cake/Some man ah get bun fi Xmas." In the first verse, Red Rat takes a direct swipe at Mr Vegas whose real name is Clifford Smith. He deejays: "The trend start October third, we heard, that girl, give bun to Clifford/the word on the street/she gi it to the nerd/him bad like ah dog, she fly like the bird/so she haffi mek him feel it in reverse/and now is a new trend ah emerge." In the second verse, he invokes humour when he deejays: question, yu figet say mi warn yu bout that girl Shellian', an offhand reference to Red Rat's iconic dancehall smash, That Girl Shellian over a decade ago. That reference has led to some fans actually dubbing the song, "Shellian Part Two".
"I've gotten great response so far from most people, a lot of disc jockeys are playing the song both in Jamaica and overseas, and it's picking up a life of its own. But for the most part all of my fans loving it and is now calling it the 'Shelliann Part two'," he said. Asked if he felt that Mr Vegas would be offended by the song, Red Rat took a jab at Mr Vegas' emotional and theatrical public meltdown, stopping short of calling him a hypocrite. "The song is not solely about Mr Vegas relationship, and I didn't write the song in a malicious way to disrespect anyone, I just simply stated the facts that were reported because I don't know anything about their personal relationship... but we all know how some of these artiste get emotional at times and take things personally. Some artistes tend to forget that they also were the ones on the other side who "giving it to people", but hypocrites are all over this industry." Red Rat still lives in Jamaica, but he tours constantly. "I am always on the grind, I've been doing a lot of writing and doing production on a few international projects, but for right now I'm putting out more singles of myself for the fans who have been wanting to hear some new Red Rat aka Double R," he said. |
