BARBARA GAYLE, Star Writer

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams has given 18-year-old student Lemarna Kemp, from Kingston, an opportunity to make good of his life when he pleaded guilty to a number of offences.

Kemp had used a knife to rob a woman of her BlackBerry phone on September 25.

When a man who was nearby intervened and hit Kemp with a bottle. Kemp stabbed the man twice in the head.

Kemp was making good his escape but a police party caught up with him and held him.

He was charged with robbery with aggravation, unlawful wounding, being armed with an offensive weapon and assault with intent to rob.

Kemp pleaded guilty to the charges in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

His attorney Courtney Foster pleaded with RM Shelly-Williams to give Kemp a second chance. She said he was attending school and was very sorry for what he had done.

The RM sentenced Kemp to 12 months' imprisonment for robbery with aggravation and assault with intent to rob. She suspended the sentence and ordered that Kemp be supervised by probation officers for two years.

Kemp was fined $2,000 or 30 days' imprisonment for being armed with an offensive weapon. He was fined $40,000 or two months' imprisonment for unlawful wounding.
