The court was told that on the day of the incident, Thomas had been discharged from hospital where she had received treatment for a blood clot in her foot, and had returned home with a prescription.

Thomas had intended to have her son fill the prescription, however, he was absent when she returned home.

Two days elapsed and her 16-year-old son had not returned home causing her prescription to remain unfilled for the period.

When the minor finally returned home, Thomas began to scold him with a piece of board initially, and later traded the board for a clothes iron that she used to continue the beating.

The child reportedly received injuries to his hand and head.

It was later revealed that the child had been home all along but was reluctant to enter the house because he anticipated that his mother would scold him.
