Fire destroys Gregory Park house

Gregory Park fire. - Rasbert Turner

Sylvia Benneth looked on helplessly as fire personnel from the Waterford Fire Station in St Catherine carried out cooling-down operation on a two-room house which was gutted by fire yesterday.

''I was awoken by a neighbour who said the house was on fire. When I woke up is pure fire,'' Benneth said.

The house which is located along Walkers Avenue in Gregory Park, St Catherine, was reportedly occupied by two persons, none of whom were present during the fire.

Reports are that about 3 p.m., residents heard an explosion and saw fire coming from the house. The fire department was summoned and two units responded.

''When we arrived, the house was completely gutted by the blaze. We set about and brought the fire under control. It could not be ascertained what cause the blaze. But the house was not insured,'' District Officer Neville Beckford said.

The police have since started an investigation into the matter.
