Aussie Under-21 team here for netball series

A 14-member Under-21 Australia netball team arrived here yesterday for a three-match series against Jamaica's Under-21 netballers. The opening game will be played on Friday at the National Arena.

Both coach Carol Byers and captain Madeleine Proud said that they were looking forward to the series to better understand the Caribbean way of playing in order to prepare the team for next year's World Youth Netball Championship in Scotland in August.

The Australian team is coming off a convincing series win against Trinidad and Tobago. The last two matches saw scores of 59-17 and 77-8 in favour of Australia.

The Australian team members; led by captain Proud, are Kirstina Brice, Courtney Bruce, Paige Headley, Cody Lange, Chelsea Lemke, Kate Moloney, Kimberley Pavaillion, Kate Shimmin, Gabrielle Simpson, Kaylia Stonton, Kate Thompson, Joanna Thompson and Micaela Wilson.

The management team is headed by Coach Byers, along with Anita Keelion, Bree McDonald, Heidi Pollington and Dr Stuart Armstrong.

The three-match series will be played on consecutive days, with the first on Friday at 5 p.m., the second the following day, also set to start at 4, while the third will start at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Ticket prices are $300 for adults and $100 for children in school uniform.

Desrine McFarlane of 3M, team sponsors of the Young Sunshine Girls, was on hand to meet the Australia team. She welcomed them along with Marva Bernard, president of the Jamaica Netball Association. Both women were also looking forward to the series, while hoping for a good showing for the Jamaica team against the Australians.
