THUGS DEMAND HOUSE 'TAX' Residential community being extorted

Information reaching THE WEEKEND STAR is that thugs have been quietly extorting homes in a section of Greater Portmore in St Catherine.

Residents of that section of the community are fearful of reprisals and for the most part have refused to comment on the matter in public.

Over the years, there have been reported cases of criminals extorting business places, however, it has been brought to the attention of our news team that thugs have extended their niche and have now included the extortion of homes.

It is unclear as to the amount of monies that residents have been paying over to the thugs, but THE WEEKEND STAR understands that extorting is ongoing.

When the matter was brought to the attention of the police, Senior Superintendent Collin Pinnock, though not admitting to reports of extortion, pointed out that he is aware of the existence of pockets of thugs in and around the area.

"I am not aware of any extortion going on in that residential area. I would have to make checks," SSP Pinnock who is in charge of the St Catherine South Police Division said.

According to a reliable source, "the place might seem quiet and residential but some thugs over there a tax people for a while now and di people padlock dem mouth and not even a tell di police whats really happening," the source told THE WEEKEND STAR.

THE WEEKEND STAR understands that after the Tivoli Gardens incursion in May 2010, several thugs had migrated to the said community.

Reports have even surfaced that the thugs have been linked to a number of fatal stabbings that have been committed in and around the area.

The Major Investigation Taskforce (MIT) is currently probing the murder of 24-year-old Sarvan Morrison who was killed on October 28.

Residents reportedly stumbled upon the body of Morrison sprawled in a gully in Old Braeton with multiple stab wounds.

It has since been reported that Morrison was possibly killed by a group of thugs elsewhere and then his body taken to a gully in Old Braeton in the parish.
