Accused UWI rapist remanded

A male student of the University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona campus, who is alleged to have had sex with a female student against her will was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The defendant, who is charged with rape, was remanded until November 27.

The matter was delayed for continuation of a bail application on the said date for the defence counsel to furnish the court with proof of the defendant's enrolment at UWI.

The Crown is alleging that on the day of the incident, the defendant held down the complainant against her will at his home and performed certain involuntary things with her.

In contrast, the defendant's attorney argued that on the day in question, her client and the complainant went on a date and afterwards an invitation was made for her to accompany him to his house.

She obliged and went home with him where certain things transpired that are now being alleged to have been done by coercion.
