Highgate surprise Arnett Gardens

Coach Michael Smith. - file

The magic of Michael Smith is again working for Highgate Football Club.

After sitting at the foot of the table for almost the entire first round of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL), the St Mary outfit have now found themselves in 11th place after a run of one draw and two wins in the second round of the competition.

On Sunday, they outplayed Arnett Gardens at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex and won 2-0 with a double strike from Roberto Fletcher.

"Taking over this job, I knew it was going to be difficult," said Smith who also produced a similar job of stabilising the team last year following the departure of Braxton Hyre before stepping down again to assist Geoffrey Maxwell who secured the team's survival in the top flight.

"I knew what the problem was as the assistant coach. I knew we needed a central defender and I put one in, played five across the middle and used two forwards," added Smith, who took over from Calvin Lewis ahead of the team's opening second-round game against Waterhouse.

At Catherine Hall, Montego Bay United Football Club (MBUFC) came from behind to clip Humble Lion 2-1.

Former schoolboy star Allan Ottey and Lesley St Fleur were on target for MBUFC while Jermaine Christian got Humble Lion's lone goal.

At Frome Sports Complex, Cavalier maintained their impressive form with a 3-0 win over Savannah Sports Club.

Cavalier are now up to fourth on 22 points, one behind Boys' Town and seven off the lead, held by Harbour View (29).

Juran Brown, Rasheed Clarke and Kirk Fletcher scored for Cavalier.

In other matches at the weekend, second-place Portmore United were edged 1-0 by Waterhouse, courtesy of an Andre Clennon goal, while Boys' Town the third-place team also lost. They were clipped 1-0 by Sporting Central Academy. Jamoly Powell scored for Sporting who climbed one spot to eighth on 20 points.
