Walters sharp and ready

Nicholas 'The Axeman' Walters

After declaring to STAR Sports yesterday that he is "ready and just has to keep sharp for the next few days, " Nicholas 'The Axeman' Walters was all set for his arrival in Jamaica today at 2 p.m., for his World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight title fight against Colombian Daulis Prescott on Saturday, at the National Indoor Sports Centre.

Walters will be accompanied by his trainer Celso Chavez. His manager Jacques Deschamps, will also be arriving this afternoon, but on a different flight.

Walters has been in intense training for the past several weeks and says that for the remainder of this week, he will be doing only light training. He is scheduled to have one public workout, either tomorrow or Thursday at the Stanley Couch Gym. His opponent Prescott is scheduled to arrive from Colombia tomorrow night.

There was a development yesterday that will make Jamaican boxing fans very happy. Promoters SportsMax has signed Sakima Mullings to be the new opponent for Rikardo Smith. This came about because the Puerto Rican boxer originally signed to meet Smith was injured and had to cancel.

After intense negotiations yesterday, the long awaited return between these two fighters will materialise. Smith defeated Mullings in the Wray and Nephew 2011 Contender series and Mullings has been itching for a return since then. Smith went on to be crowned the middleweight champion. They will meet over 10 rounds in a junior middleweight contest, and this will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the six-fight card. All the supporting cast of boxers will be arriving over the next few days with Thursday as the final day for arrival. The official weigh-in will take place on Friday.
