MAYOR OF Kingston, Angela Brown Burke, is seeking to assure the public that plans are in place to improve the shopping experience in downtown Kingston this Christmas.

According to Brown Burke, a number of meetings are taking place to make the plans a reality.

"We made a promise that this is going to be the best shopping experience ever, and so what we have started to do is have a series of consultations," Brown Burke said.

"We have met with the police, we met with the merchant representatives, we have been meeting with the market vendors, the technical team, just looking at the issues," added Brown Burke.

According to the mayor, KSAC officials have already identified some issues which must be addressed to ensure that shoppers enjoy their visit to downtown.

These include the sore point of sanitation, which has long been a concern of visitors to the market district.

Brown Burke said the KSAC will also address the number of vendors selling in areas not designated for vending.

"We are not convinced that we do not have enough space in the markets. What we have, in terms of the situation, is that individuals who have a space in the market have several persons selling for them on the streets.

"We have a number of persons occupying the streets ... and I believe if we can control that, then we can have a good Christmas."

The mayor also issued a warning to party promoters and others that they could be in trouble if they stage events without the permission of the KSAC.

"I want to remind all persons that events being held in the Kingston and St Andrew area will require an amusement licence issued by the KSAC," declared Brown Burke.

Events requiring licences include parties, dances, concerts, fish fry, festivals, plays, and any other entertainment events.

Applications to the KSAC must be made five working days prior to the event.
