Christmas in the City is here

Norman Grindley/Chief Photographer - Christmas in the city shopping last year. The shopping frenzy is back this year and bothretailers and consumers are looking forward to the event.

If you are not yet feeling the spirit of the Christmas season, then a visit to the island's number-one shopping district - downtown Kingston - is bound to lift your spirits.

Retailers in the community are promising huge discounts on a wide range of items needed for the home, for personal use or as gifts for your loved ones.

It's best to go early, as the deepest discounts are available on limited supplies of older stock, but as much as 30 per cent is also being offered on items which have been brought in for the year-end shopping season.

Once again, The Gleaner's Christmas in the City initiative will bring alive and fulfil the deep desires of shoppers who wish to get the best deals for their dollar.

Downtown Kingston is the location to find fresh chocolate, sorrel, meats and other ingredients for the Christmas meal; new tablecloths and curtains; paint; silverware and wine glasses for the home; and hot shoes and clothing suitable for the parties of the season.

A long list of gifts may also be sourced in stores which often are the size of American-style warehouses. So wide is the choice in stores on Church, Princess, King, East Queen, Laws and Orange streets, and Parade itself, that you would be advised to start doing a few push-ups in preparation.

Participating stores in Christmas in the City slated for December 13-15, will be having longer opening hours. Most have stocked up and will be offering special discounts on the majority of items.

Remind yourself of the good times of yesteryear by visiting your favourite stores early with your list of necessities for the home and gifts for those near and dear. Store owners and smiling staff will be waiting to serve you.
