Guilty plea for ganja found in bag

A man who said he was unaware of how ganja came to be found in his possession pleaded guilty with explanation at the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Demar Francis, who is charged with possession of ganja, taking steps to export ganja and conspiracy to export ganja, was stopped by the police at the Norman Manley International Airport where 5.8 pounds (2.64 kilograms) of ganja was reportedly found in his suitcase.

illegal substance

Francis told the court that the suitcase in which the illegal substance was found was loaned to his cousin who went overseas earlier this year.

He said when his cousin returned to the island, he collected the suitcase from him as he needed it to go away for work.

Francis said he only became aware of the ganja in his belongings when he was stopped at the airport.

A fingerprint order was requested and Francis is to return to court for trial on January 14.
