January sentencing for drug dealer

A sentencing date of January 16 was set in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, in a matter involving a man who was travelling from Curacao and was caught with cocaine at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA).

The accused, Travis Gilman, has been charged with possession of, dealing in and taking steps to import cocaine for which he pleaded guilty. He pleaded not guilty for conspiracy to import cocaine.

In court, it was revealed that Gilman arrived in the island on an Insel Air flight from Curacao. While he was at the NMIA, he was questioned by police as to his reasons for travelling but gave conflicting stories. The police then subjected the man to tests where he gave positive readings for cocaine.

The accused was then taken to the Kingston Public Hospital and X-rayed, where foreign objects revealed to be 20 cylindrical pellets were found in his system. When expelled, the pellets allegedly contained powdery substance resembling cocaine.

A fingerprint order was subsequently made.
