Star Tell Me Pastor

Concerned virgin

Dear Pastor,

I am 18 years of age and I have never had sex before, and I fear becoming pregnant because I am not ready for that. I recently left high school and I promised myself never to have sex until I leave high school. Now, I changed my mind because I am afraid of becoming pregnant the first time I have sex.

I just want to know if there is a possibility that I may become pregnant the first time I have sex? I am afraid because I have a big future ahead of me and I don't want to spoil it by becoming pregnant. I also want to know if a virgin can take birth control to prevent pregnancy when she has sex for the first time? Please, I would love to hear your advice.

Concerned Virgin,

Evidently you have not taken the time to inform yourself about sex and pregnancy. Your letter saddens me because at your age you ought to know that if you were to have unprotected sex, you may become pregnant. Your letter indicates that you are uninformed about what can happen to any young woman who has become sexually active and is not on any form of birth control and whose boyfriend is not using the condom.

You need to try and get an education. You are not ready for an intimate relationship. I am telling you to go back to school. You have completed high school, but you need more than high school training in this competitive world. Some guys may tell you that you are ready to face the world and that they will take care of you, but don't believe them. You are a virgin. But all a virgin needs to do is to have unprotected sex one time and she can become pregnant. And even if you were to go on the pill, if you do not take it according to the instructions you can get pregnant.

If, however, you are determined to have sex and is considering going on the pill, you should discuss this matter with your doctor.
