Carpenter, welder sentenced for ganja

Two men who were recently found in possession of over 1,000 ponds of ganja were sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

They are Andrew Beale, 34, welder and John Stephenson, 39, a carpenter, both from Greenwich Town, Kingston addresses.

Both men were fined $15,000 or three months in prison for possession, $500,000 or one year in prison for taking steps and $500,000 or one year for trafficking 1035 pounds of ganja.

Resident Magistrate Georgianna Fraser also ordered both men to serve a mandatory sentence of 12 months.

It is reported that the police, acting on information nabbed the two accused men in a Toyota Hiace bus outside the gate of the Kingston Container Terminal.

The court heard that the drugs was found in several travelling bags.

The men were subsequently arrested and charged.
