Barbadian on drug charges

A Barbadian caught exporting ganja from Jamaica was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Charged with possession of, dealing in, taking steps to export and conspiracy to export ganja is Corey Bowen. He pleaded guilty on all counts.

Bowen told the court that he was faced with two extremely poor situations in his home country and was taking the ganja there to make the situation better.

Bowen also told Resident Magistrate (RM) Lorna Shelly-Williams that he took the chance with the drug now rather than in the next five months as he felt he would have better luck.

The court heard that Bowen was found with a pound and four ounces of the drug hidden in body wash and rum bottles.

Allegations are that when he was accosted by the police, he uttered, "I know what I did. All I want is some leniency. I came to Jamaica to visit my girlfriend."

RM Lorna Shelly-Williams fined the accused $2,000 or 30 days for possession and $100,000 or 30 days for taking steps to export ganja.

The remaining two charges were admonished and discharged.
