Taxi operator arrested for sexual assault

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

A 37-year-old taxi operator who was said to have sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl three years ago was convicted in the St Catherine Circuit Court yesterday.

The Crown led evidence that in October 2009, the accused picked up the complainant in his vehicle.

He started to get friendly with the child and took her cellular phone number.

On one occasion while taking home the complainant, he let off the other passengers. He then lured her to his home where he sexually assaulted her. Relatives of the complainant found out about the incident and made a report to the police.

An investigation by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse led to the man being charged with carnal abuse.

The accused was remanded until February 1 when he is to be sentenced.

Presiding judge was Justice Evan Brown
