Policeman killed in confrontation

A policeman was shot dead during a confrontation with gunmen in Malvern, St Elizabeth, yesterday.

He is Special Constable Troy Foster formerly attached to the Black River Police Station.

The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) said about 6:15 p.m., Foster was among a group of officers on mobile patrol when on reaching Malvern, a confrontation developed between them and a group of gunmen, who opened fire hitting him. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

One of the attackers Tyrone 'Chevy' Edmond, from Kingston, who was before the courts for a murder committed in Top Hill, St Elizabeth, in 2010, was also shot and killed. A .45 semi-automatic pistol was recovered from the scene.

The slain cop is the second special constable to be killed since the start of the year.

On January 13, Special Con- stable Kennard Chong, who was assigned to Harman Barracks in the Agro and Environment Unit, died in hospital from a gunshot wound to the head.

It is still unclear if his death was a suicide or homicide.
