One arrested for illegal light

One arrest was made yesterday as the Jamaica Public Service company (JPS) carried out its continued campaign against the illegal abstraction of electricity.

Teams from the JPS accompanied by members of the security forces conducted an illegal wire removal exercise across the communities of Olympic Way and Waterhouse in St Andrew, where almost 2,400 wires were removed from the JPS infrastructure.

Also, 160 cases of bridged meters/self-reconnections and other illegal connections were discovered.

Meanwhile, other JPS teams carried out meter investigations in Aylsham, St Andrew. No incidents of illegality were detected, the company said.

JPS Head of Security, Major George Kates, says that, "JPS is launching sustained operations all-island, for as long as is necessary, to significantly reduce losses due to the illegal abstraction of electricity."

Last year, the company spent US$30 million fighting the illegal abstraction of electricity.
