Get your weekly dose of comedy

Regularly available comedy appears to be alive and active in the Kingston entertainment district again.

There are the annual events like Ellis International 'Christmas Comedy Cook-up' and Best Care Lodge's charity show 'Come Mek Wi Laugh' that have become fixtures on the entertainment calendar.

However, except for a rare show here and there, not much was happening by way of regular weekly or monthly presentation of live comedy. That situation appears to be changing, as a number of comedy shows are now cropping up.

The new monthly live interactive-comedy and novelty series called'Comedy Café'got off to a banging start last Wednesday at South Beach Café. The first edition served up exciting fun and games facilitated by popular comedy duo Ity and Fancy Cat, who were assisted by their 'Comedy Café Playmakers', and patrons entering the venue were greeted by a dancing stilt-walker.

The show featured performances from Shady Squad Dancers, Rohan Gunter and Kathy Grant. Shady Squad didn't just dance. They presented dynamic dramatised routines that were exciting and hilarious. Rohan Gunter delivered up some witty and clever original comedy that had the audience impressed and entertained. Kathy Grant did that and more. She brought the house down.

New stage sensation

New stage sensation, nine-year-old Wayne J also made an electrifying cameo appearance.

If the audience turnout and the innovative displays at the first instalment on January 30 is anything to go by, Comedy Café on the last Wednesday of every month is definitely a date to mark on your entertainment calendar. And there are other dates as well.

L. Nicole Brown from Imagine Dat Entertainment Agents [booking agents for a number of comedians including Christopher 'Johnny' Daley] also started a new live comedy series called 'Comedy-Tainment'. Hosted by actor Jerry Benzwick, that series takes place at Redbones Blues Café with shows on the last Thursday every other month. The first instalment was on December 20, 2012 and the second show is scheduled for February 28.

Renae Garrel of FAME FM started a weekly on-radio comedy show called 'Lady Renae's Mek Wi Laugh!' late last year, hosted by comedians Pretty Boy Floyd and Iceman. Mek Wi Laugh has now evolved into a live series which will be officially launched at a date to be announced soon. Another monthly series, called 'Cackle Nuff' that was launched in May 2012 by Donovan Watkis, will also be revamped and revived in the near future.
