Brittney Mighty - Fondly remembered by family, friends

"She was every mother's dream of what they wanted a daughter to be: quiet, honest, hardworking and totally unselfish," is how Arlene Mighty, aunt of Brittney Mighty, remembered her niece, whose lifeless and badly decomposed body was found in Port Rocket, Port Royal, recently.

"You would chase her to bed and she would still be under the sheets reading a book. She was not a party person. Right now my body is hurting," continued her aunt, as she described the 23 year-old University of Technology (UTech) alumnus, who was also employed to the university's human resources department.

The police reported that about 5:15 p.m. last Thursday, Mighty, who went missing on Sunday, January 27, was found buried under stones and grass and clad in a dark-coloured blouse. A man has been taken into custody for questioning, but his identity is being withheld pending further investigations.

Mighty's aunt spoke on behalf of her brother, Dwight, Brittney's father, who resides in Annotto Bay, St Mary, but was too shaken up to speak. She explained that the last they heard of the budding young woman, was that she was on her way to her Greater Portmore home in St Catherine. Little did they know that she would not have made it home.

"She was to have come home to her house to do her hair on Monday. She called, but she didn't call from her phone and that was unlike her. She would normally call and give a play by play of where she was and how far," Mighty explained. "We are close, we're quite a protective family."

When Brittney did not come home, the family grew even more concerned and journeyed to Portmore to find her. Their search ended when her body was found.

At UTech, members of the human resources department were dejected. A source at the institution explained that based on their interactions, Brittney was a very friendly and warm person.

President of the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship at UTech, Jermaine Lawrence, explained that Brittney was a lively, quiet and focused person who believed in high academics.

A UTech alumni blog has also been established with several members giving heartfelt words and comments.

"Colleagues, I am deeply saddened at our sister's passing. Brittney, your calm and caring personality on campus will be missed! It's hurtful that you cannot even hear or read these messages. Therefore, as a tribute to you, I will say to others on your behalf, love your brother as you love yourself and a soft answer still CAN turn wrath away, talk it out, words are not short!" wrote Camilla on the site.
