A senior citizen is one of two persons who died in separate motor vehicle collisions in St Catherine yesterday. Five others were left hospitalised.

Those killed were Kevari Newton, 27, a labourer from Kingston 20, and Sylvia 'Fatty' James, 63, a higgler from Spanish Town, St Catherine.

Reports are that about 8 a.m., Newton was riding his Honda motorcycle with a pillion rider along the Linstead bypass in St Catherine. He was travelling towards Ewarton behind a Daihatsu truck.

The police said on reaching near the Commodore Cemetery, the truck indicated and turned right. Newton attempted to overtake the truck and collided with the rear.

He and his passenger were thrown from the bike.

Newton died on the spot while the pillion rider was admitted to the Linstead Hospital with multiple injuries.

in the other incident, the police said James was a passenger in a Honda motor car travelling towards Mount Rosser. Upon reaching near the mud lake, the driver failed to keep to the left. The Honda collided with a Toyota Hiace.

James, who was in the front passenger seat, was killed by the impact, which left both vehicles extensively damaged.

The Honda driver and three other people in the Hiace were hospitalised following the collision.

The St Catherine North Traffic Department is probing the incident.

The deaths bring to five the number of road fatalities in the St Catherine North Division since January. There were 28 fatalities last year.
