Men lead the way on Valentine's Day

Crystal Harrison, Staff Reporter

Jamaican men have seemingly outdone their female counterparts this Valentine's Day, by leading the way and going all out in treating their love interests on the special day.

Several stores that THE WEEKEND STAR checked with yesterday revealed that men were the number one buyers of either expensive flowers or gift baskets.

Floral arrangements costing over $20,000 and assorted gift baskets with $14,000 tag prices were hot numbers purchased by men.

Several gift stores either had to call in additional staff for the day or extend their closing time.

Angela Ferguson, manager of Mystique, an adult toy store in Negril, Westmoreland, had to cut her interviewing time with our news team due to the Valentine's Day buzz in her store.

However, Ferguson managed to tell us: "Sales have been going pretty good."

mainly males

"One thing that I can say is that since yesterday, there has been a mad rush at the store. There are one or two females coming in, but it's mainly males who have been coming in to purchase floral arrangements, roses, orchids and other gifts," Dionne Lindsay , sales representative at the floral boutique, Tai Floral Luxe, in Kingston told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Lindsay added that one of the most expensive gifts that was sold yesterday was one priced at $19,200 and it included flowers.

"We normally close at 6 p.m., but we are going to close at 8 p.m. in order to accommodate our customers," Lindsay said.

Nickolae Marshall, a sales representative at another floral boutique in Kingston called All Wrapped Up, said that there was also abuzz at her store because of Valentine's Day.

"There has been a significant increase in sales which is surprising. We do floral arrangements and we sell gift baskets, perfumes, colognes and other novelty items. Our 6 p.m. closing time maybe extended because we are seeing an increase in the volume of orders for today Valentine's Day, more than any other day," Marshall said. "Our gifts will cost anywhere between $3,500 and $14,000. This time around it's mainly males who are buying the gifts. The most expensive floral arrangement that we sold is one that is called 50 Roses, and it went for $22,800."
