Man fined $50,000 for stabbing

After pleading guilty to stabbing another man with a knife, Winston Shields was fined $50,000 or six months in prison.

Shileds, who appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, was sentenced by Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey.

Allegations are that on the day in question, the accused used a knife to stab a man from his comm-unity in the stomach.

The court heard that the complainant spent two days in the hospital as a result of the incident.

It is reported that the complainant was trying to help settle a long-time feud between the accused and his father.

"He was calling me names and provoking me, Your Honour, I didn't wilfully do it," the accused told the court.

Despite Shields' sentence, the RM had some words of wisdom for the complainant. "Don't get involve in anything like this again. It is none of your business. Issues about this man (Shields) and his father is none of your business," RM Pusey said upon learning the complainant wasn't a relative or a close family associate.
