'Black And Proud' still getting good airplay

As the island's celebration of Reggae Month rolls on, reggae-dancehall artiste Black Queen is experiencing a surge in support for her emotionally charged single Black And Proud as more disc jockeys have put the song back in rotation because of the strong pro-black messages it conveys.

"It's just been a great look, I have been getting a lot of airplay. I just want to big up the disc jockeys who are showing support, Mama Elise, Big A, everybody from HITZ and ZIP, much love. The other day, Mutabaruka was at a Black History month show and asked 'why isn't Black Queen here?' and that motivates me. It shows that Black And Proud is taking off because it connects with the people," the deejay said.

In December, the song peaked at No. 4 on the HYPE TV Top 20 charts and maxed out at No.2 on Suzie Q's Video Alley show on TVJ.

The single has become an insider sensation in dancehall circles because of its strong lyrical content, catchy delivery and its pro-black sentiments in a nation grappling with its `identity, and has endeared Black Queen's single to local disc jockeys and black power activists.

"People are also putting up the video on Facebook and Twitter and sharing it, so this whole Black History Month vibe is definitely helping," she said.

Recently, Black Queen recorded singles such as Look A Life on the Chase Mills Records/Pusha Yute Production imprint, and Ex-Girl featuring Richard Dawkins on her own BQ Productions label.

"You have to be able to do different songs for different segments of the marketplace. the love song is geared towards older folks, while the dancehall track is for the hardcore fans," she said.

She is looking forward to performing at this year's 'Follow Di Arrow' concert in March. Last year, she did a six-week tour of the United States of America, doing gigs along the Eastern seaboard. This year promises more of the same.

"I have a few confirmed bookings and I expect more to roll in," she said.

Black Queen first made a name for herself with her R&B-flavoured Roll With Me, which did exceptionally well on the CVM Hitlist countdown, peaking at No.3. Afterwards, she scored a major hit with You Say, that peaked at No.1 on the FIWI Choice top 10 charts. The song also gained a lot of support from the radio disc jockeys who loved the saucy, juicy track, and the public loved the racy, visually excellent video that accompanied it.
