Principal sends students home for graffiti

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Principal of the Bog Walk High School in St Catherine, Patrick Phillips, said he plans to meet with a group of disgruntled parents with the view of readmitting students to the school after they were sent home for writing graffiti on a classroom wall.

The principal said the problem of children writing graffiti on the school's compound would not be tolerated.

"A teacher caught a boy writing graffiti on the wall of a classroom on Friday. Others were there in his presence. I am saying all are guilty by association," Phillips said.

Phillips said the boys were sent home and the parents told to provide paint to fix the area. He said parents should be glad to see the school is trying to maintain a clean environment for children to be in.

Gale Smiley said her son was among those sent home by the school for being present during the 'paint job'.

"I want my child to be at school, so I don't expect to be told to save his lunch money to buy paint," Smiley told The Star.

The principal said a collaborative effort is needed for the benefit of all.

"We think parental education can help to ease the problem of discipline," the principal said.

Meanwhile, Dean of Discipline Christopher Campbell said he was only carrying out the orders he was given.
