Residents of Spanish Town in St Catherine have expressed mixed feelings about an initiative by the police to remove murals depicting slain dons from the Old Capital.

THE STAR understands that as a part of an ongoing crime-fighting initiative, the St Catherine North police have been removing a number of the paintings, as they maybe sending the youths wrong messages.

Some of the places that the murals of slain dons have been removed from include, Tawes Pen, Thompson Pen and several communities along the Spanish Town bypass and Old Harbour Road.

Several residents who spoke on the request of anonymity to our news team said that they had mixed reactions.

"Some of di paintings dem are still up, if di police dem want to remove dem, then it is of no problem to me because di police cannot remove the loyalty dat we have in our hearts," a man from Tawes Pen said.

A woman who only identified herself as Marjorie said that most people in her area have mixed feelings about the removal of the paintings. "Some persons believe that what they are doing is disrespectful, but I think it is a good idea because a lot of us are raising children. Some children look up to these so-called dons," the woman from Dela Vega City said.

Meanwhile, a resident from one of the communities off Old Harbour Road said, "The time has come for these so-called gangsters to know that after they die, nobody not going to glorify dem in death."

Senior Superintendent Anthony Castelle, head of the division, said none of the removed murals, depicting slain dons in Spanish Town, has so far been repainted by residents.

When asked if the police have been getting any resistance from residents in carrying out their initiative, SSP Castelle said, "I will not comment on that, but none of the removed paintings are back up."
