The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is urging people to avoid areas known as breeding sites for crocodiles now in their nesting season.

NEPA says crocodiles nest between March and August and become more aggressive during this period as they are very protective of their young.

It says breeding sites can be found in Portmore, St Catherine, South Clarendon and wetlands in St Thomas, St Elizabeth and Kingston.

The agency is appealing to members of the public not to provoke crocodiles, as they are sensitive animals and may react aggressively if cornered or attacked.

It says where crocodiles are seen in areas outside their natural habitat and where they may pose a threat to human activities or if they are being harassed or harmed, a report should be made to the agency or the police.

NEPA is reminding that the crocodile is one of Jamaica's many endangered species and is protected by law.

Capturing or killing the animal is an offence under the Wild Life Protection Act and anyone found guilty of this offence is liable to a fine of up to $100,000 and 12 months' imprisonment.
