The executive director of Job Quest is expected to return to court on March 28 with at least $1 million of the money she is accused of swindling from persons she allegedly promised jobs. Christine Kelly has been charged with several counts of fraudulent conversion as well as obtaining money by false pretence. The matter has been before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court since 2010. The number of complainants against her have been increasing since her previous court dates. There are at least 35 matters before the court. Allegations are that between 2007 and 2009, she collected US$1,500 (J$129,000 at the time) from the various complainants purporting that she could obtain employment on their behalf in countries such as the United States, Canada, England and Dubai. In court, two separate judges heard her matters one of which had to be transferred. It was revealed that she owes $4.2 million to the complainants. These total 30, between the Sutton Street Resident Magistrate's Court and the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. Resident Magistrate (RM) Lorna Shelly-Williams asked the attorney representing the accused when Kelly would be able to make restitution, and was told that her house is now up on the market for sale, the proceeds of which to repay the complainants. RM Lorna Shelly-Williams told the attorney that she has heard that before and is expecting that $1million will be paid on the next court date later this month. One of the complainants could be observed in tears and another had to be seated. |
