Trial begins for alleged senior citizen's attacker

A man who allegedly assaulted a senior citizen in 2011 went on trial yesterday for assault occasioning grievous bodily harm charges.

Sean Roye, of a St Elizabeth address, appeared in the Black River Resident Magistrate's Court where his trial got under way.

It is alleged that on September 21, 2011, Roye attacked Manuelito Dyer, who is now 71.

"I came to the home of the young man, I am told he does not live there, to pay his mother for some bammy. He came from my left. In a matter of seconds, he, Sean Roye, shouted at me, ran around the corner with a pipe and give me a massive blow on [the left] hand and broke it," The complainant testified.

Dyer claims that Roye struck him once more on the same hand and that after the attack he was bleeding profusely, and began passing out and had to be taken to the hospital.

Dyer says that a report was made and the accused was subsequently charged.
