Policeman granted $1m bail

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

A policeman charged with a sexual offence was granted bail in the sum of $1 million when he reappeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The accused, who was attached to the St Catherine South Police Safe School Programme, was granted bail after a successful application by attorney-at-law Ricardo Sandcroft.

He told the court his client was a good candidate for bail.

The accused was bailed on condition that he returns to court on May 14. He is to report to the Franklin Town police three times weekly and keep away from the complainant.

He is charged with sexual grooming, sexual touching and child pornography.

It is alleged that he had sexual contact with the 15-year-old complainant. He reportedly used his phone to take photos of the child's private area. Each time his phone rang, the child's private area would appear on the screen. His phone was inspected by his superiors and an investigation launched.

Statements were collected and a file sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions which ruled that he be charged.

He was charged under the Child Care and Protection Act.
