A woman who allegedly stole a woman's baby and registered it as hers was remanded when she appeared in court on Tuesday. Elsie Williams, 52, of Moneague, St Ann, is charged with uttering forged documents, child stealing and human trafficking. She was not offered a plea when the matter came up for mention. When the case was mentioned before Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green, it was revealed that two statements are outstanding. "Your honour, we are awaiting statements from the Child Development Agency (CDA) and the Registrar General's Department (RGD)," Clerk of Court Nicole Kellier said. The accused was subsequently ordered remanded by the resident magistrate. Allegations are that the accused lured the mother of the seven-month-old baby by offering financial support. The child would occasionally spend time with her. She reportedly took the child to the RGD saying it was her biological child. The child was registered in a different name from that which the mother had given. She eventually took the child to the Cayman Islands to live. Eventually, the child was brought back to Jamaica and left with a relative. The mother went to the address and retrieved her child. Not satisfied, the accused then reported the matter to the CDA that the child is now living in sub-human condition. An investigation was launched by the CDA which revealed the irregularities. Williams was subsequently arrested and charged. She is to reappear on April 9 when the matter will again be mentioned. |
