Independence City Primary celebrates Jamaica Day |
|||||
![]() Grade-one children perform. - Anthony Minott photos Flag-bearing children lined the corridors of Independence City Primary School in a show of patriotism as they joined thousands of other students nationwide who celebrated Jamaica Day which went under the theme: 'Celebrate Jamaica: We on it'. Most students wore clothes depicting the national colours. The school had a short programme where students sang and danced. The high point of the concert was the school's dance group. Also giving creditable performances was Grade One with Carry Mi Ackee and Lovely Island. Grade Two did the lively Kumina dance. Even the school's principal, Jascenta O'Connor, joined the festivities. Grade Three did a folk song, Dip And Fall Back. Meanwhile, students' taste buds were enticed by traditional foods such as hominy corn, fritters, sprat, ackee and saltfish and run down. They also snacked on grater cake and potato pudding. Independence City Primary was once an all-age institution, and it opened its doors to the public in April 1975 as one of the first schools in modern Portmore. Modern Portmore had its genesis in 1969 with the construction of the Independence City housing development by West Indies Home Contractors.
