Ultra-talented deejay Famous Twenty is third generation reggae royalty as he is the grandson to the late great Alton Ellis, but he is not relying only on his superstar genes to push him to stardom. He believes in hard work and determination as the driving forces in his life.
The young man recently recorded a bouncy new single called Let's Have A Party for King Dreams Records. The single features the ice-cream smooth vocals of singer Malica.
"Mi love the energy so far for Let's Have A Party, the song de pon a lot of the local entertainment blogs and some disc jockeys just start show me some love," he said.
The label, King Dreams Records, is putting some financial muscle behind the project, shooting a music video for the song which will be released this week.
In the meantime,
"I just want people to recognise me for me. I give thanks for my grandfather who set the musical legacy for us to follow on, but I want to make it on my own steam. I am not trying to ride on the great legacy he created, I want to add to it," he said.
Music has always been a part of his everyday life. Coming from one of Jamaica's most successful musical backgrounds other than the Marleys, the name Ellis is synonymous with hit songs and a solid musical catalogue.
Famous Twenty grew up seeing his grandfather doing radio interviews and recording sessions, and that experience just further inspired him to play a role in the music industry. But even watching his grandfather, mother and other artiste, Famous Twenty soon found that his particular talent was dancing.
"Dancing and sports were my fascination growing up ... but music has always been a part of me from age 11. I was always singing at school concerts and in the living room with my mom whenever family came over," he recalled.
Famous Twenty's mother was a pretty good singer, and she has played a key role in his decision to pursue his fortune in the music business.
"Seeing my mother sing all the time was a big part of my motivation, she always inspired me to dance and do the music that is deep rooted in his family, so the legacy lives on," he said.
Famous Twenty will be premiering his new video on HYPE TV, and doing interviews on TVJ's 'E Prime'.
