Despite the current economic hardships facing many throughout Jamaica, some women are forking out as much as $100,000 to purchase virgin hair in an effort to keep up with the latest trend.
Virgin hair refers to hair that is completely unprocessed and intact and comes from a single donor, who is usually a woman.
According to reports, the hairs that are popular in Jamaica are Indian, Brazilian, Malaysian, Cambodian and Peruvian hairs.
THE STAR understands that some women are spending up to $100,000 to purchase these luxurious manes.
Thirty-three-year-old Nickesha from Montego Bay told THE STAR that in her area, the hair costs over $20,000 per bundle.
"In MoBay, virgin hair costs around $24,000 per bundle, and the hair comes in small amounts, so around four packs would be needed to do my head," she said.
She continued, "Normally, my friends would have it in for about a year, but I do it every two months."
Nikesha told THE STAR that unlike most women who wear the weaves for length, she wears it in an effort to maintain her hairstyle.
"I am Indian, so instead of spending almost $5,000 to style my hair, which after styling would last like an hour, I use the weave because the style lasts longer," Nikesha said.
In the case of 23-year-old Melissa, she said that she has spent up to $30,000 on virgin hair.
"I've been wearing virgin hair for over a year now, I spend anywhere between $20,000 to $30,000 on the hair depending on the length."
Melissa told THE STAR that she is willing to spend that amount of cash because she sees it as an investment.
"To me, it's more of an investment. If you know you love to wear weave this is the best route, it's better than packed hair," she said.
Hair By Camz proprietor, Camz, told THE STAR that the virgin hair business is very lucrative in Jamaica.
She revealed to THE STAR that she has sold up to $60,000 in virgin hair to a single customer.
She said on average her customers will spend up $5,500 to $18,000 per bundle depending on the type and length of the hair.
While the manager for a recently opened hair store told THE STAR that some of the women who purchase these hair state that the price is insignificant.
"We've had women spend over $50,000 on virgin hair, the women who spend that amount are used to it, so it's like nothing to them," she said.
It was revealed that women aren't the only purchasers of virgin hair.
According to Camz, men also purchase them for their spouse or in an effort to receive sexual favours.
"I have a lot of guys who buy it for their girls, a lot of them like to see their women in the hair, while some will buy it to get sexual favours from women," she stated.
When asked why they think women are willing to spend exorbitantly on these hairs, Camz told THE STAR "Women see virgin hair as an investment, because of its flexibility and lifespan, it can also be dyed and treated like it's your own hair; it can be removed, washed and reused."
While the manager of the recently opened store stated "Women will spend the money because the hair will add beauty to them, it's the icing on the cake, so for them, it doesn't matter the cost."
