Dancehall deejay Dexta Daps has released a conscious new single called Life that is fast becoming a hit with disc jockeys on FM radio because of its gritty imagery, brilliant wordplayand hard-knock-life sentiments on a rock-inspired dancehall beat.
"The song deals with real life issues based on my personal experiences growing up in the garrison and then travelling overseas. When you return to Jamaica, you realise how wicked it is in the ghetto, how brutal and how grateful you have to be when you go through and you're still living," he said.
Dexta Daps, who grew up in the war-torn communityof Seaview Gardens,St Andrew, said that he has experienced the horror of seeing a man gunned down right in front of him.
"The man died right in front of me, we stand up at the same place andthe bullet hit him and not me. As I get older, Irealise that that bullet could have easily been meant for me, so no matter what experiences I face, I realise that nothing is worth more than living," he said.
The single, which is released on the imprint of theUS-based independent label Diamond Music Empire, is also available on iTunes and other downloadable sites.
"Right now, with the help of Diamond Music Empire, mi a lay the groundwork for great things to come. I don't have a lot of shows coming up but I have a few promotional appearances on radio stations and clubs in the US, and that will be the launching pad for my career; Diamond Music Empire is taking over," he said.
The 26-year-old,whose given name is Louis Grandison, said his early influences in music came from dancehall heavyweights such as Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killer and Elephant Man - who all came from his community.
"I used to listen their songs and then go deejay them to my friends, until I started writing my own songs," he said.
