73-y-o becomes first-time father
SHELDON WILLIAMS, Staff Reporter
At age 73, when most men are fathers to adult children and are grandfathers, Derrick Morrison recently welcomed his first child into the world.
Baby girl Telle Amhis Morrison is being referred to as a miracle baby especially since her father is in his past child-making prime, and her mother is at the age where giving birth to a child carries a risk.
Born on July 2, she weighed in at 2.98kg (6.56lb) and has been garnering a lot of attention like her parents, especially when her dad's age is revealed.
Parents Sophia Morrison, 40, and Derrick Morrison, who are Christians, have welcomed comparison to biblical couple Abraham and Sarah who had Isaac in their golden years.
Derrick admitted he was shocked when his wife told him he would be a dad. "I was surprised. Really wasn't expecting anything like that. Really wasn't praying for anything like that, but I was really excited all through the pregnancy," he shared.
Sophia expressed, "Apart from the doctors saying I might have a high-risk delivery, I had no complications."
Derrick shared that he had given up on becoming a father after two prior marriages failed to produce an offspring. He said he reached a point in his life when he had become content not being a parent.
"My first wife couldn't have any child," he revealed. He was first married at age 22 that lasted 1962 to 1980. Then he remarried in 1984 until 2003. Then, he married again in May of last year to his current wife.
"To tell you the truth, I didn't have any expectations. I reached the place where I said this is it, I'm just gonna live my Christian life. Since my last wife passed off, it's been nine years since I had seen another woman. Before I met this wife, I was just relaxing," he joked.
Derrick said he met Sophia in church where they both carried out evangelical duties. Eventually, she moved to the community he was living in. They got closer and fell in love.
When asked if he thinks he will be able to playfully keep up with his daughter when she gets older, Derrick responded, "You mean because I won't be strong enough? Me can ramp it out man. Mi no have no weakness. I've been to the doctor and I haven't had any physical illness, I'm physically well," he reassured.
Both parents said they have no imminent plans to expand their family but said their Bishop had prophesied that a son would be joining eventually.
"Bishop said, tell them that God has news for them. Him coming with the boy," Derrick shared.
For Sophia, she was unprepared for another baby but added that if it's God's will then she would accept it.
"No enuh. But even with Telle I wasn't prepared. But I had prayed asking God if he sees it fit then it would be your will, but I wasn't physically prepared," Sophia shared.
Derrick joked, "Take into consideration according to my age, I may not be around to assist her, so I wouldn't want to give her so much trouble. She alone for a good part will have to bring up this child."
Sophia emphasised that "God is in control, God is the starter and the finisher, so if God gives him 25 more years, what's he going to do about that?"
Sophia has two sons from a previous relationship, ages 23 and 14.
