CCRP to stage HIV/AIDS awareness workshops

The Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRD) will be staging a series of workshops geared towards enhancing the knowledge and awareness of HIV/AIDS among older persons.

The workshops are being financed by grant funding under the US PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) programme.

The workshops dubbed, 'PEPFAR/CCRP HIV/AIDS Awareness in Mature Adults', are slated for this month and January next year. The first will be held on Wednesday, December 11 at the Sts Peter and Paul Parish Hall in St Andrew from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Another is scheduled for Saturday, January 18 and the final workshop will be held on Thursday, January 30.

Persons are being invited to attend any ONE of the workshops as all three will have the same basic content. They have been scheduled for varying dates and times to accommodate as many persons as possible who wish to attend.

Professor Denise Eldemire-Shearer, chair of CCRP, explained the purpose behind the workshops. "We are aware that our seniors play a very influential role in family, church and community life. Information gained from the workshop can empower attendees to become strong advocates for behaviour change, as it relates to HIV/AIDS infection, treatment and prevention," she said.

"They will also enable attendees to become valuable resource persons within their own communities, in combating the disease and reversing the trend of increased HIV infection in Jamaica."
