Accused confesses to assaulting partner

A man on Friday confessed to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court that he assaulted his girlfriend out of jealousy.

Linval Hemmings, who is from the Corporate Area, is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

He pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court heard that Hemmings hit the complainant, causing injury to the left side of her face.

When asked by Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece why he hit the complainant, Hemmings said: "I was jealous, Your Honour. I hit her out of jealousy."

An attorney pleaded for the judge to be lenient with Hemmings because he was young and in love.

The attorney complimented the complainant on her natural beauty and advised the accused man, "next time you go for a ugly woman because when dem pretty, you a go in a trouble."

The courtroom erupted in laughter.

The attorney appealed to the magistrate to let Hemmings seek counselling at Bethel Baptist Church.

He will return for sentencing on December 18.
