Accused pleads guilty to stealing from sister

A 20-year-old woman who is accused of stealing money from her pregnant sister pleaded guilty when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Charged with fraud is Keena Laing from a Hannah Town address.

It is alleged that on November 24 at around 7:30 p.m., the complainant gave the accused $40,000 to pay her water bill on her behalf, but after numerous unanswered phone calls and the bill unpaid and money unreturned, the police were summoned and Laing arrested.

Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked the accused "What happened to the money?" to which Laing brazenly responded, "I spent it, but I have $16,000 at the moment."

Laing is to return to court on December 20 for mention with the rest of the money along with an additional amount to pay the complainant's reconnection fee.
