The annual Portmore Dog Show and Exposition, which was held recently at the Caymanas Park infield was abuzz with excitement.

Many persons marvelled at the obedient drills performed by the dogs, which clearly showed why the animal is considered man's best friend.

Michael Fisher of K9 Kennels, had patrons spell-bound as he demonstrated with a Dutch Shepherd how to attack an intruder. The dog jumped and grabbed his arm, which was covered with protective clothing, and would not let go.

"Lawd, jeezas! look how the dog jump pon him and nah let go. It really strong and determine and sensible, too," Coleen Hamilton, a patron, said.

Fisher was thrown to the ground by the determined dog and all efforts to get the animal to release his arm from its grasp proved futile - not until the dog got a specific command. "These dogs were imported from Belgium in January. they are used in Europe and America by the security forces," Fisher said.

Apart from similar demonstrations, there were also games and giveaways. Prizes were given for the best-dressed mongrel, best Rotwielder, best-dressed poodle, and overall best dog. The latter won the Sun City Goode Promotion trophy, plus dog food from Purina.

Promoter Morris Goode, said this year's competition was strong on the obedience drills.

Rohan Daley hosted the show while Deferome 'Big D' Branch was the judge.
