Vendor caught with illegal cigarettes fined

A vendor who was caught with a quantity of illegal cigarettes was fined yesterday when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Charged with Breaching the Customs Act is Dennis Campbell.

He pleaded guilty and offered an explanation.

The court was told that Campbell was held with 41 packs of illegal cigarette.

Campbell said, "Your honour tings ruff wid me so mi use dem and sell dem at mi stall ... I got them at a bargain price ... "

He was told by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey that his explanation did not make the offence legal.

He was fined $58,283.55 or six months imprisonment.
