Man serving life freed of murder charge

A man who reportedly stabbed a man to death at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre was freed in the St Catherine Circuit Court on Friday.

Michael Wignall, who was serving life sentence at the centre, was freed on his newest murder charge when the matter was mentioned before Justice Horace Marsh. The accused was cleared of that charge after the Crown could not prove self-defence.

Wignall was freed after attorney-at-law Courtney Maxwell told the court that the man attacked his client who had to defend himself. Maxwell told the court that the Crown had failed to prove otherwise. He said the accused should be given the benefit of the doubt. The Crown conceded, and Wignall was told he was freed of that murder.

Allegations are that in May 21,2009 both men were on the Psychiatric Ward at the institution.

There was a confrontation during which time the man was killed.

An investigation resulted in Wignall being charged with murder.
