Man accused of chopping, burning girlfriend charged

The police St Elizabeth have charged 30-year-old Rohan Thomas, the former boyfriend of 18-year-old Kimberly Simms, who was chopped to death and set ablaze at her house in the parish three weeks ago.

It is reported that the incident took place in Nain.

The cops said Thomas is to appear before the Black River Resident Magistrate's Court this week.

He was taken into custody on November 29, following a lengthy stand-off involving the police and residents who wanted to attack him.

Allegations are that he forced his way into the house, locked himself inside a room with Simms and their two-year-old child, and chopped her before setting her ablaze.

Hundreds of residents surrounded the house and demanded that he be released to them.

Police reinforcements, supported by the use of military helicopters, had to be brought in from Kingston to restore order and extract the suspect from the building.
