Woman ordered released or charged by judge

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

A woman held in connection with a one-year-old baby found in bushes during an alleged shoot-out between gunmen and police has been ordered released or charged.

Resident Magistrate Natalee Brooks made the ruling following a habeas corpus application brought before her by attorney-at-law Lancelot Clarke. Clarke told the court that his client has been allowed to languish in jail after she went to retrieve her child.

Brooks subsequently ruled that the woman be charged by 10 a.m. today or be released.

The woman was detained on Wednesday when police personnel engaged gunmen in a shoot-out in Central Village. The gunmen fled during the shoot-out, leaving two guns and a number of illegal rounds of ammunition.

The infant was heard crying in bushes and was rescued by the police. Sometime later, the woman turned up to claim the child and was taken into custody.
