Motorist fined $25,000 for bribery

A motorist who offered a policeman $2,000 not to prosecute him was fined $25,000 or six months' imprisonment when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court last Thursday.

Howard Reid, 38, of Fraser's Content, St Catherine, was charged with bribery.

When the matter was mentioned, the accused pleaded guilty.

Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green then ordered that Reid be fined.

The court heard that on the day in question, the accused was spotted along March Pen Road. The police stopped the vehicle and found that Reid had breached the Road Traffic Act.

He was being prosecuted when he offered a policeman money.

He was subsequently charged by Special Corporal Jason Bailey.
