Man gets bail for the new year
Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

A man whom the police had taken back in custody for allegedly failing to report as a bail condition was given bail for the new year following a successful application by his lawyer.

He is Neville Saunders of Guy's Hill district, St Catherine.

When Saunders appeared in Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, his $100,000 bail was reduced to $50,000.

Attorney-at-law Shantez Raji Stewart argued that contrary to police report that Saunders failed to report to the station, he had in fact been reporting. "We have a book here suggesting that he was reporting to the police as part of his bail condition," Stewart said.

The attorney told the court that his client is charged with corruption. However, the investigating officer has since been charged with breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.

Saunders' bail was subsequently readmitted on condition he reported to the Bog Walk police on Mondays and Fridays.

Allegations are that the accused was held for allegedly not honouring his bail condition to report to the police weekly.

He is to reappear in court on May 14 when the matter will again be mentioned.
