Construction worker sentenced for fraud

A two-year sentence was handed down to a construction worker in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday for failing to pay over funds that he owed a woman, after he didn't build a section of her unfinished home.

Forty-nine-year-old Leroy Bartley is charged with fraudulent conversion after he was allegedly given a job by the female complainant to construct her home.

repay funds

The court heard that the accused failed to complete the job and didn't repay the funds that were given to him.

The matter was reported to the police and Bartley was arrested.

Despite pleas from Bartely's attorney not to send him to prison on the basis that he wants to repay the complainant, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said that she will not allow the matter to slide and instructed the complainant to sue Bartley to recover her money.
