WOMAN BEATEN WITH MOP STICK - Man fined for offence

A man who used a mop stick to beat a woman over allegations that she threatened to poison his animals was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

He is Derrick Needham, who pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered the accused to pay $15,000 or serve six months in prison.

Allegations are that on the day of the incident, the accused and the female complainant got into a heated argument and Needham used a mop stick to hit the woman on her shoulder and other sections of her body causing bruises and swelling.

The accused told the court that the complainant threw stones at him and threatened to poison his goats.

"Your Honour, mi never beat her wid no mop. Her hand never get burst or anything. She said dat she was going to poison mi animals dem and dem did a provoke me. She and her son attack mi and fling stones afta me," Needham told the court.
